Digital Hearing Aids Adelaide

Oticon have released their latest technology, the OticonOpnTM and the new technology is promising to change how hearing aids work in the presence of competing sounds. Built on the new VeloxTM  platform performing 50 times faster than the platform it replaces. Velox also works over 64 frequency channels making the hearing aids very fast and very precise.

The advantage of the OticonOpn is within the all new Velox platform. With the ultrafast noise reduction, Velox allows the soundscape to be kept open, in all environment, including noisy situations and still allow the hearing aids to significantly improve speech understanding. OticonOpn uses the new OpenSound Navigator which is capable of handling multiple, dynamic speech and noise sources.

Unlike conventional technology which relies on directionality and tries to reduce surrounding sounds, the OticonOpn treats sound sources individually – without treating all other sounds as noise. To allow users to feel comfortable in the environment, OpenSound Navigator balances surrounding sounds. This leaves the speech sound clear and background sounds audible but not distracting.

Rebalancing individual sounds makes it easier for users to separate sounds and for the brain to switch attention.

Current hearing aids use directionality to assist people in noisy environments, however this creates an artificial listening experience by focusing one way and trying to close down sounds from around us. Whilst this is helpful to many hearing impaired people in noisy situations, it does have it’s own limitations. Directionality deprives the brain of the context needed to make sense of sound and deprives the listener of a dynamic sound experience.

Patients deserve a richer, fuller, more natural sound experience and OticonOpnTMmakes it possible, providing meaningful listening experiences and significant cognitive benefits:
  • 20% Less listening effort – reducing the load on the brain in noisy environments
  • 20% More capacity to remember – freeing up mental resources, enabling the user to recall more in noisy environments
  • 30% Better speech understanding – even in the most noisy environments, without suppressing surrounding sounds through narrow directionality.

Hearing starts not only with the ears, but also with the brain, and much of Oticon's focus is to also support the way the brain makes sense of sound. The conventional industry mindset is to compensate for damage in the ear by just making everything louder – similar to holding a trumpet to the ear and pumping more sound into it. At Oticon – they think brain first. They help the brain make sense of the sound it receives from both ears. In order to truly hear and understand your world, Oticon believes your brain must work with your ears to do 4 things:

  • Constantly use both ears to locate and orient to what is happening in the environment
  • Separate relevant sound from competing noise
  • Know where to focus, especially in noisy environments
  • Recognise unique or familiar sounds in order to make sense of them
When your brain and ears are not able to do this easily, you have to expend much more effort trying to makes sense of what is happening around you.  With hearing impairment, staying engaged in conversation requires higher concentration, increasing the work or ‘cognitive load’ on the brain.  This puts demands on energy already needed to enjoy an active and social lifestyle.  Oticon recognises this, and strives to develop hearing instruments of the finest quality to ease the load on your brain, and help preserve your energy for life.
Oticon calls this, BrainHearing™, and they are pioneers in this unique way of thinking about hearing loss.

Up until recent times hearing aids were either packed full of available features and technology, or they were small and cosmetically appealing devices. Advances in technology now allow the tiniest of hearing aids to be packed full of the most current and up to date features. Oticon now combines excellent technical performance with a discrete design that in many cases is invisible to others.

All Oticon hearing aids including the smallest devices now come with full wireless capability as they are compatible with the connectline accessories and help bring the world of hearing aids together with the TV, mobile phones and home phones, as well as any bluetooth enabled audio devices. This means the hearing aids are able to become dedicated ear pieces and used instead of headphones to conncet to many electronic devices.
